About Credit Unions
As member-owned, not-for-profit financial cooperatives, credit unions differ structurally and philosophically from other financial institutions.

Owed to their foundation as a social movement, credit unions believe strongly that they have an obligation to work toward the betterment of their communities.

They believe, too, in people working together to achieve a better life.

The Credit Unions Care Foundation of Virginia has made a $10,000 donation to aid food banks and the Salvation Army this holiday season. Funds are being distributed to all areas of the state thanks to the support of Virginia's not-for-profit, member-owned credit unions, which contribute financially to the Credit Unions Care Foundation.

"The economy has strained our communities and limited resources. Our Foundation has made it possible to help in this time of need by donating a total of $5,000 to food banks across the Commonwealth and $5,000 to support the Salvation Army's work in Virginia," said Gerrianne Burks, president and CEO of Herndon, Virginia-based Northwest Federal Credit Union and chairman of the Credit Unions Care Foundation of Virginia. "Credit unions are proud of our service to our members and our communities, and we know these funds will be put to good use in serving those in need."

Credit unions are community-focused organizations that believe strongly in giving back to the communities they call home. Collectively, Virginia's member-owned, not-for-profit credit unions donated more than $1.1 million and 11,539 volunteer hours to charitable and community organizations in 2008, according to information compiled by the Virginia Credit Union League and the Credit Unions Care Foundation of Virginia.

The Credit Unions Care Foundation of Virginia was established in May of this year as a non-profit organization dedicated to the charitable, educational and community causes supported by Virginia's member-owned credit unions. You can learn more about the Foundation online.
